The Benefits of Kinesio Tape

Die Vorteile von Kinesio-Tapes

Key Points at a Glance

  • Whether on TV or while playing sports: You've probably seen athletes using those colorful adhesive tapes.
  • However, it is not just a fashion accessory, as many people believe.
  • No, the elastic cotton strips with an acrylic adhesive layer are used as therapeutic tapes.
  • But what exactly are these bands used for?

Kinesiology tape—or Kinesio tape for short—is not a colorful, decorative adhesive tape, but rather an elastic tape used for therapeutic purposes. It doesn’t offer much benefit during actual sports activity, but it supports the body’s natural healing processes during the recovery phase. For this reason, the tape isn’t just for athletes.

Kinesio tape stabilizes the relevant area of the body

The tape is made primarily of cotton, and an adhesive acrylic layer ensures that it stays securely in place. A secure hold is important because Kinesio tape is only effective if it remains on the skin for at least four days—preferably seven.

However, this type of tape does not contain any substances that penetrate the skin and act on the muscles, tendons, and joints, as heat ointments or warming patches do, for example. The tape works by flexibly following all of the body’s natural movements at the site where it is applied—solely through the stability it provides to that area of the body. This stability arises because the tape is about as thick as human skin. For this reason, it also has the same elasticity. And that is exactly why it aids in healing. But how does it work?

Kinesiology tape creates more space under the skin

It might sound strange at first, but that’s exactly how this type of tape works: It creates more space between the innermost layer of skin and the underlying tissue. And that space is incredibly valuable for the tissue—whether it’s soft tissue, fascia, or muscles. First, this relieves pressure on the pain receptors, eliminating the constant pressure on them. Second, the aforementioned body parts can glide more easily within the newly created space, significantly improving range of motion.

Third, lymphatic and blood circulation are optimized. Wherever the body regenerates itself—that is, wherever a healing process is taking place—good blood circulation is essential. The lymphatic system, in turn, ensures that any swelling, inflammation, or accumulated fluid in the affected areas of the body is reduced or removed.

Trust the Professionals

You can buy Kinesio tape anywhere, but at least for your first application, you should consult a specialist and not apply the tape to your skin yourself. Incorrect placement can have negative effects on biomechanics. If you use too much tape or pull it too tight when applying it, you risk skin irritation and blisters.

In addition, there are certain groups of people who should avoid using the tape. If you have sensitive skin, it can cause irritation and rashes; people with a lot of body hair should shave the relevant areas before use, as the tape will not adhere properly otherwise. It is also best to avoid using the tape if you have an adhesive allergy, as well as in cases of venous thrombosis or open wounds. Last but not least, we advise against using Kinesio Tape if you are undergoing active cancer treatment or suffer from systolic heart failure.
