How Corona could have a lasting impact on us
The most important points in brief
- We often hear or read what could happen when Corona is «over».
- But the question is whether this will ever be the case psychologically, even if the pandemic no longer plays a role from a virological point of view.
- This means that lasting everyday patterns will develop out of the pandemic.
- What phenomena could it be?
Since the beginning of 2020, hardly a day has passed without hearing or reading the statement “when Corona is over”. However, there are increasing voices who are of the opinion that there will be no «after Corona», even if the pandemic has disappeared virologically. Because our behavior patterns trained by the virus - or at least some of them - should remain.
The "Zukunftsinstitut" has developed four scenarios after the corona crisis
The "Zukunftsinstitut" is based in Frankfurt am Main, researching trends and - derived from them - the prospects for the future. Officially only for Germany, but with regard to the Corona situation there are clear parallels with regard to Germany, Switzerland and Austria, i.e. the German-speaking area.
The initial thesis developed by the institute is that after the Corona crisis nothing will be the same as it was before. There are four possibilities of what our future will look like - although it could well be that there is a mixture of two or more of these four options.
The negative prophecies after Corona
Not everything that comes «after Corona» is necessarily negative, but there are calculations that the system could crash completely. So it is not completely unlikely that a permanent focus on the respective national interests of a country will emerge. International cooperation could collapse, border closings are normal again and conflicts over vaccines, medical devices and other things break out.
Another scenario says that the isolation that all people experience from the shutdown will become normal. We can no longer meet with others unencumbered, and before you venture out into the unknown, i.e. among people, you simply stay at home. If you want to leave the country, you need a permit; stays abroad become high bureaucratic hurdles. And cooperation at the intergovernmental level hardly takes place anymore, trade agreements are practically devalued.
There are also positive opportunities after the pandemic
Apart from the fact that in the future we may make sure to disinfect our hands regularly and, if in doubt, wear masks in local public transport or in the supermarket (there is a wide range of masks, disinfectants and the like in the online shop), says However, the Zukunftsinstitut also has good developments ahead. Should there be a return to local networking, this could also mean that we shop much more regionally and concentrate on small communities or on the family. Then we would live much more sustainably.
A fourth scenario says that the world population learns from the crisis and emerges stronger from it. Adjusting to the circumstances is easier for us and when changes happen, we accept them better and are more flexible. Because the economy is growing more slowly, the compulsive pursuit of economic growth and profit would soon be over. Companies need new business models and ideas and may be thinking about sustainable and ecological offers for their customers.
As I said, this is all trend research that shows possibilities. But it can also be that people in Switzerland - just like in Germany and Austria, by the way - just keep hoarding toilet paper when a crisis threatens.
