How healthy are vitamin waters?
The most important points in brief
- Vitamin waters are trendy - as the name suggests, they contain a large number of vitamins, as well as minerals.
- But the question is whether vitamin water is healthy.
- Because in addition to the substances mentioned, these drinks often also contain a lot of sugar and artificial flavors.
- Accordingly, vitamin water can be dangerous if you drink these drinks too often outside of sport.
Anyone who does sport often and intensively needs the supply of external nutrients. This includes vitamins and minerals, but also carbohydrates. Sugar, for example, contains a lot of carbohydrates, which is why sugar is a good source of energy and replenishes our memory during exercise or afterwards. But one thing is also clear: Too much sugar is unhealthy. Anytime, anywhere, how to turn it.
Vitamin water usually contains plenty of sugar
Because too much sugar increases the risk of disease. Heart disease and type 2 diabetes are common consequences of excessive sugar consumption, and fructose, which is abundant in vitamin water, is also a burden on the organism. Last but not least, the liver has problems processing an excess of sugar. In the long term, other organs can also be affected. You also run the risk of increased insulin resistance, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease or high blood pressure.
The bad news: many of the vitamin waters you can buy are high in sugar. So pay close attention to the ingredients when buying, otherwise you could end up with vitamin water that contains almost as much sugar as a cola or other lemonade. But not all vitamin waters are so unhealthy - there are also manufacturers who pay attention to the sugar content.
Does fruit also have too much fructose?
Since fructose was mentioned earlier, the impression could arise that we also consume too much sugar when we eat fruit. This is not true, however, because fruit in its natural form also contains fructose - but the energy density of apples, bananas, tropical fruits and the like is too low for there to be a risk of excess fructose when you eat fruit .
Some vitamin water brands deliberately avoid high amounts of sugar and fructose. You can safely consume these products while exercising. Vitamins, on the other hand, are in good shape with most vitamin waters, almost all types have a high value of B and C vitamins. Some vitamin waters cover half or even more of the daily requirement of these vitamins - and there is no need to fear overdosing here.
Not only vitamins, but also nutrients can be included
There are also some manufacturers on the market whose drinks also contain vitamins A and E. But that's not all, because the minerals magnesium, zinc, chromium, potassium and manganese - or at least some of them - are also dissolved in many vitamin waters. If you drink a vitamin water that has a reasonable amount of sugar, then the corresponding drink is actually healthy.
However, it is best to only consume vitamin water if you are actually doing exercise. Then the organism is able to burn the added sugar or only then does the body really need the sugar. It is healthier if you mix yourself a vitamin water at home, all you need is water and the desired fruit mixture. You can use lemon-orange, raspberry-kiwi, mint-strawberry or a variety of other flavors, just as you like it. And of course you can do without sugar completely if you prepare your own vitamin water.
