Industrial sugar - good and not so good alternatives
The most important points in brief
- There is industrial sugar in almost all products on supermarket shelves.
- There are plenty of alternatives, from stevia to birch sugar and honey to sugar beet syrup.
- But not every sugar substitute is equally healthy. Many are high in calories or bad for blood sugar levels.
- In addition to other products, coconut blossom sugar and birch sugar are recommended.
Much has been written and spoken about that industrial sugar is anything but healthy and does not require any further literary effusions. That is why we want to deal with the alternatives at this point, and there are undoubtedly them. But what are they? And which are actually suitable as a healthier variant?
Anything is healthier than industrial sugar? Not true
Now one could quickly get the idea that practically any alternative is better than the sugar refined in the factory. But this assumption is wrong. Some are really healthier, others are not or only superficially:
- Birch sugar, agave syrup or agave syrup, coconut blossom sugar and stevia are good to healthy in many ways. You have to cut corners with honey.
- Whole cane sugar and cane sugar are not bad per se, but they make the blood sugar skyrocket and thus cause cravings.
- The unhealthiest option is definitely sugar beet syrup.
Stevia, coconut blossom sugar and others are great alternatives
Stevia, for example, is popular, produced in a complicated process from stevioglycosides and aluminum salts. Stevia has hardly any calories and is also not harmful to teeth. Speaking of calories and how to get rid of them: Kanela has a large selection of excellent diet products. Coconut blossom sugar, however, is considered to be very sustainable; it is actually made from coconut blossom juice. The cultivation conserves resources and the end product does not particularly raise blood sugar levels. Luckily, this also prevents hunger pangs.
One of the better alternatives is birch sugar, which tastes slightly minty and is not only good for the immune system, but also for oral care. The birch sugar does not let the blood sugar level skyrocket either, which makes it diabetic-friendly. Agave syrup, which consists almost entirely of natural fructose, is also rated positively. So if you want to eat vegan, take agave syrup instead of honey for sweetening.
Natural product with disadvantages
Speaking of honey, it is of course also a good substitute for industrial sugar. It is twice as sweet as commercial sugar, but has the disadvantage that the honey crystals hide between the teeth and cause damage there. Another disadvantage of this natural product: the high amount of calories.
Whole cane sugar and cane sugar do not have this property, but they are only considered healthy to a limited extent. Both drive up the blood sugar level and make you feel hungry. And if we give in to this hunger, then it is only possible through the intake of food - that is, through the intake of calories. In this respect, whole cane and cane sugar are not considered to be slimming agents. Sugar cane syrup is boiled down, bleached and crystallized juice from sugar beet; it is poison for our teeth, our figure and our general health.
Natural fructose is healthy
Above, there was already talk of fructose, which is a natural product that is consistently healthy and is highly concentrated in numerous types of fruit. But be careful: Fruit sugar or fructose can also be produced industrially with the addition of corn starch. This industrial product promotes fat storage in the body and can lead to high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.
By the way, there are great alternatives to conventional sugar in the Kanela online shop.
