What are hemorrhoids?
The most important points in brief
- The lack of exercise and poor nutrition not only lead to obesity and other diseases.
- This also promotes the development of hemorrhoids.
- But what is it all about?
- Hemorrhoids occur when the vascular cushion between the rectum and the sphincter swells, like a lump or a varicose vein.
Between the human rectum and the sphincter muscle of the anus there is a cushion made up of vessels in which swellings similar to varicose veins can form. Sometimes this also happens in the form of nodules. In principle, the cushion is a dense network of veins and arteries that work together with the sphincter.
The swelling of the hemorrhoids is accompanied by inflammation
But where does the name come from? Well, the vascular cushion is called plexus hemorrhoidalis in technical terms. If the blood vessels expand, this is almost always accompanied by inflammation. And the swelling in turn ensures that the hemorrhoids that have formed are pushed out of the tissue.
No wonder hemorrhoids are uncomfortable. But of course we also have to look into the question of how these swellings can arise in the upholstered vessels. And the answer is: mostly constipation caused by a lack of exercise and a wrong diet is responsible. The combination of low-fiber food, too little fluid and lack of exercise during a professional activity carried out while seated greatly favors the development of hemorrhoids.
Hereditary propensity for hemorrhoids
Those who sit a lot often suffer from constipation anyway, and blood congestion often occurs below the hips. This makes hemorrhoids more likely to form. In some people, however, the tendency to this condition is genetic. The sensitive thin walls of blood vessels are usually the problem. With increasing age, the dwindling elasticity of these vessel walls also occurs - which again favors the formation of hemorrhoids.
A third cause is obesity. If you weigh too much, you put pressure on your rectum with your own body mass. This hinders the circulation of the blood and promotes the swelling of the above-mentioned vascular cushions. Pregnant women also have to deal with this problem.
How do you diagnose and treat hemorrhoids?
Diagnosis is easy for specialists; palpation is often enough. A colonoscopy often reveals this judgment. The doctor then decides whether an operation has to be carried out or whether a conservative treatment method also promises success. No matter what the specialist recommends, you should be prepared for the fact that you will have to radically change your diet. Even more movement is inevitable from the moment of treatment.
If you find yourself suffering from hemorrhoids, you shouldn't make the mistake of hiding it. For many, complaints relating to the anal region and the intestines are still a taboo. But if they are not treated for a longer period of time, this can have extremely unpleasant consequences - it is not uncommon for unbearable pain to occur. Often you can no longer even sit normally. An anal fissure can also develop. This is a tear that occurs in the lining of the anus when the hemorrhoids are rubbed when using toilet paper. Bacteria can penetrate through the wounds and cause purulent infections.
