What can be done against chapped lips?

Summer is over; the days are getting shorter and, above all, colder. In addition, there is more heating again, which means that the air becomes drier. The body is above all well wrapped up outside, but something that cannot be protected from the cold and dryness and which is extremely important to us: our lips. All the worse when these become dry, brittle and cracked, especially in autumn and winter. But this can not only happen in the winter months, some suffer from it in other seasons as well.
But why do lips become chapped? There are numerous sebum and sweat glands in our skin. Due to the cold, however, these glands work less and the skin can no longer store moisture as well. However, lips only have sebum glands and - unlike the body and face - no sweat glands. Because of this, lips can dry out even faster, become brittle and cracked.
Briefly moistening the lips does not help against drying out
Brittle and chapped lips are very uncomfortable and a feeling of tension occurs. As a reflex, the lips are usually moistened with the tongue. This helps in the short term, but in the long run it will only make the lips drier. Because; the saliva evaporates on the lips and the moisture is thus only withdrawn more.
Tips against chapped lips
- Honey is probably the most tried and tested home remedy for chapped lips. Leave a thin layer of honey on your lips for about 15-20 minutes (or overnight) and then remove it with a clean cloth (no water). The honey must also not be licked off with the tongue, because then saliva would come back to the lips and dry out the lips again.
- Olive oil is not only healthy for eating and cooking, but also helps with lip care. Let the olive oil work on your lips for about 15-20 minutes. Olive oil contains fat, which is returned to the lips when the oil is applied.
- Drink plenty of water to keep the water balance in balance and to restore moisture to the skin and lips.
- Avocado can also help against chapped lips. Shrink the pulp so that it becomes a creamy consistency. Then leave this on the lips for about 15-20 minutes.
Vitamin deficiency causes dry lips
Dry lips can also be caused by a vitamin or iron deficiency. If you suffer from dry, chapped or chapped lips for a long time, it is recommended to contact a specialist doctor.
