What effectively protects against insect bites?
The most important points in brief
- The bites of insects are one of the more unpleasant side effects in the warmer seasons.
- In some years there are countless of these nuisances, especially when it is humid and warm in spring and summer.
- Not only outside, but also inside, the bloodsuckers can be really uncomfortable.
- The question remains: What effectively protects us from the bites of insects?
When mosquitoes attack, it is not without consequences. While we hardly notice the insects during the day, but only feel the consequences of their visit on our skin, the high-frequency buzzing with which the beasts announce themselves at night causes us to sleep and to lose our mind. The attempt to arm yourself efficiently against the stings and the subsequent, often unbearable itching, is probably as old as humanity itself. The question remains, what helps and how.
Insect protection does relatively well
The relevant agents from the insect repellent range - for example from Anti Brumm, Phytopharma, Puressentiell and Sensolar - usually work pretty well. Regular use is only recommended if you really are in nature. The sprays and creams should not be used at home as they can cause allergic reactions. Eye irritation is also a possible consequence.
If you travel to areas where there is a risk of malaria, you should make sure that the substance diethyltoluamide (DEET) is included in the products. In Central Europe it is sufficient if the active ingredient Icaridin is part of the cream or spray.
Proper clothing for protection against insects is crucial
Even when it's hot, long clothing protects well against thirsty insects. However, the material is crucial. Thinner materials and even jeans are no obstacles for the bloodthirsty tormentors. The more densely a fabric is woven, the better. What we also know: Overall, dark clothes protect less well than light ones. Why is still unclear today.
What many people probably don't know: Mosquitoes like socks, and worn socks. A lot of sweat is formed there during the day, which decomposes into butyric acid and ammonium. So changing socks and washing your feet are real options, although you prefer to be barefoot on the balcony on a warm summer evening, right?
Essential oils and nutrition can help against insect bites
We all have this grandma or aunt who knew a little household remedy for everything. One often reads that essential oils of mint, lemon or lavender can help against insect bites, but is that also true? The German Wildlife Foundation is skeptical - but one or the other mosquito could keep the aromas off. The disadvantage: the aromas evaporate quickly, you theoretically have to oil the skin every quarter of an hour.
Diet also decides whether we magically attract the stinging hexapods or not. For example, one should try not to eat rice outdoors, as this food causes more carbon dioxide to be released through our breath and our pores. For mosquitoes it is like an invitation to a feast. According to the German Wildlife Foundation, however, cabbage has a deterrent effect. The problem is that cabbage doesn't really make you feel good in the heat.
Otherwise you should attach mosquito nets with very fine meshes to the windows and take mosquito nets with you to the beach or bathing lake. There are also nets with tight meshes for prams that can be easily attached to the vehicle.
