The most important points in brief:
- House dust mites can be found in every household and cannot be seen with the naked eye
- House dust mites are generally harmless to humans
- The excrement of house dust mites can cause an allergic reaction in humans
- Regular airing and vacuuming are important to combat
Be careful if you suffer from sudden sneezing, red eyes and tiredness; these could be symptoms of a house dust mite allergy.
House dust mites are small animals that can be found in house dust in every household and have nothing to do with poor hygiene. Since they are only between 0.1 and 0.5 millimeters, they cannot be seen with the naked eye. House dust mites are harmless to humans. They do not transmit disease, nor do they sting or bite. Nevertheless, people are allergic to it. Strictly speaking, on the excrement excreted by the house dust mites. The proteins contained in the feces can cause house dust allergies. Mites feed mainly on human skin flakes and are therefore often found in beds, carpets, pillows and sofas. When the room temperature is still around 25 degrees or higher and the humidity is around 80 degrees, the mites only really feel at home.
Most of those affected then suffer from the following symptoms; Itchy, red and watery eyes, nasal congestion, mucous cough, and itching or rash on the skin.
There are now many tips and home remedies for combating and improving a house dust mite allergy. We would like to share the most important tips from our point of view with you:
- Ventilate the apartment regularly and thoroughly.
- Change your bed linen more and more and wash them at 60 degrees
- If the symptoms are very severe, mite-repellent covers, so-called encasings for the mattress, duvet and pillow, can be bought.
- Anti-mite agents, which can be bought in specialist shops, can be used to combat mites.
- Clean your apartment with damp dust cloths and wipe the floors with a damp cloth.
- Upholstered furniture is real mite catchers, so make sure that you have as little upholstered furniture as possible in your apartment. Leather sofas are better suited for this.
- Vacuum regularly and remove the dust on dust catchers such as open shelves, open wardrobes, etc.
What do I do on vacation?
If you or your children suffer from a house dust mite allergy, it is advisable that you choose a hotel that has allergen-free rooms. In addition, it is recommended that mite-repellent (bed) covers are taken with you. If this is not possible, ventilate the hotel room regularly.
