When is a vitamin B deficiency present?
The most important things in brief
- The lack of a vitamin from the vitamin B complex is almost always due to lifestyle.
- A lot of alcohol, a lot of nicotine and a poor diet are often a reason for a lack of vitamin B.
- But symptoms usually only appear when the deficiency is permanent.
- Ignoring the signs can have fatal consequences.
Do you often feel tired, burned out and listless? Are you sometimes pale, have trouble sleeping or unexplained inflammation? Loss of appetite, diarrhea, headaches, gastrointestinal problems? Is your skin scaly, often inflamed, or do the corners of your mouth crack easily? These can all be symptoms caused by a lack of B vitamins. Let yourself be examined by a doctor.
See a doctor if you suspect it
By examining your blood plasma, doctors can easily determine whether you are deficient in one (or more) of the B vitamins. You shouldn't take these signs lightly. If it is really a vitamin B shortage, then this must be counteracted as soon as possible.
However, you can also check for yourself whether there could be a vitamin B deficiency. For example, someone who has been ill for a long time is at risk, but too much alcohol and nicotine or medication also increases the risk of actually suffering from a shortage of a vitamin from the vitamin B complex. But age and diet also play a role in this context.
Older people often eat poorly
But why the age? Well, it's statistically proven that as we get older, we eat worse and worse. On the one hand, the amount that older people consume is often not sufficient to cover their vitamin needs. On the other hand, older people no longer necessarily pay attention to eating food that is particularly rich in vitamins.
But which B vitamins are at risk of deficiencies having worse effects? This is particularly the case with vitamin B1, vitamin B6, vitamin B9 and vitamin B12. Of course, to avoid this, you have to know the symptoms - and with B1 deficiency these are often fatigue, shortness of breath, cramps, paralysis and more as well as anemia, rashes on the skin, cracked corners of the mouth and inflamed tongues or lips with a lack of vitamin B6 . Anemia, depressive moods, mouth ulcers, tiredness, pale skin and more indicate too little vitamin B9 or B12.
The long-term dangers of vitamin B deficiency
The symptoms, however, are not the real problem. In the long run, the consequences are very different. Too little vitamin B1 can damage the spinal cord and brain and limit brain activity. The cardiovascular system can also be affected. B6 deficiency, on the other hand, leads to numb limbs, scaly rashes on the scalp or face and dysfunction of internal organs (such as the liver) and the nervous system in the long term. In addition, the body can often no longer utilize certain minerals, i.e. magnesium, calcium or iron.
Anyone who consumes too little vitamin B12 runs the risk of developing a neurological spinal cord disorder. A lack of B12 and B9 is also particularly problematic for pregnant women - or for the unborn child. This can lead to malformations and miscarriages (in the case of B9 deficiency) or to premature births or the child's weight being too low at birth. A delay in the development of the child or neurological impairments can often be the result if pregnant women suffer from a vitamin B12 deficiency.
