Why baby powder is still necessary today
The most important points in brief
- With hardly any other care product for babies, opinions differ as widely as with baby powder.
- Some consider it dangerous, others hardly know anything better about caring for baby's buttocks and preventing blemishes and pimples.
- It is true that inhaling powder is dangerous for your baby - coughing fits and even suffocation are possible.
- However, this risk is almost zero if you carefully powder your child's bottom.
Baby powder is like so many things of our time. People flatly reject the product and point out the danger that the powder poses to the respiratory tract of the youngest, and yes, it cannot be dismissed that inhaling baby powder is not entirely safe for our youngest. The airways can be affected, severe lung damage or pneumonia can result. On the other hand, however, there are parents who praise the use of powder over the green clover. And as is so often the case, it follows from these diametrically opposed positions that there is a golden mean.
Caution is of course advised with baby powder
This golden mean means: You can use baby powder responsibly. The fact that one is careful with a baby has been given to parents by nature, but sometimes hints can be valuable, precisely because knowledge changes over time. Baby powder used to be used in large quantities, and it certainly harmed some children - today we know why. On the airways.
However, you would never give your baby dangerous objects if you knew the danger behind them. And baby powder is only dangerous for children if they can get their hands on the cans and tubes and remove the lid. If you, as mom and dad, always store the powder in such a way that your baby never gets to the tube by itself, then you don't have to worry. Not to mention applying a manageable amount of baby powder to the bottom.
What baby powder really helps against
Pimples and other blemishes on baby skin are most likely to occur in the diaper area - more precisely in a damp diaper. Parents don't have to worry about this, after all, diapers are there to catch the baby's urine. You can't change diapers umpteen times a day, even the most enthusiastic parents will quickly notice that. So it is quite natural for minor imperfections to form on the skin on the bottom.
There is no substitute for the careful use of baby powder to eliminate these skin problems in your child. The powder contains a substance called talc, which soaks up the moisture on otherwise smooth buttocks and ensures that the inflammation improves quickly. In addition, the powder contains zinc, which fulfills two functions: On the one hand, zinc also helps to reduce inflammation, and on the other hand, the substance strengthens the child's immune system.
Do not combine baby powder with cream
For correct use, you should adhere to the amount recommended by the manufacturer. Too much powder is not good because it can cause lumps to form under the diaper. With careful dosing, you can also use baby powder for damp spots in the back of the knees and armpits of your baby. As an alternative to powder, zinc-containing wound protection cream is recommended, but you must not use it in combination with baby powder.
