Key Points at a Glance
- In the past, the term “fountain of youth” was heard quite often; today, anti-aging products are said to slow down the aging process.
- This actually always refers to the condition and appearance of the skin.
- There are now a wide variety of products on the market that claim that regular use of these products can keep the skin looking young.
- But just how effective—how good—are these products, really?
Humanity’s oldest dream is probably not even the ability to fly, but rather to remain young forever. As far as we know, no member of our species has ever been granted this gift. In the early 21st century, however, this dream is being revived—perhaps more strongly than ever. People want to be younger than they actually are, and anti-aging products are booming. But is this justified? What can these products actually do?
Anti-aging is more than just a fad
The dream of eternal life is just as legitimate as the desire to have children or to live a life free from financial worries. Who are we to judge the wishes of others? Secretly, however—and this is ultimately what makes the human race so unique—we all know, of course, that our time will eventually come. So it’s only all too understandable that we might want to postpone that moment just a little.
Exercise and a healthy diet are two factors that have been proven to help with this goal. After all, people who live healthier lives usually live longer, too. On the other hand, the effects of so-called anti-aging products do little to extend life—in that sense, the name is, of course, misleading. Yet, if the advertising is to be believed, these products can have a decidedly positive effect on our skin. But is that really true?
What Anti-Aging Products Do to the Skin
To put it figuratively, our skin usually reveals our true age just as clearly as our birth certificate does. After all, the old saying that the skin remembers everything—even the tiniest sunburn—is not without truth. The same applies to the skin on our faces; age and lifestyle can also be read from it, at least to a certain extent.
Anti-aging creams can’t really hide your age, though; rather, they ensure that your skin gets what it needs. Well-cared-for skin automatically looks younger than neglected skin. But what do these creams provide that other products don’t? First and foremost, they replenish the skin’s moisture reserves. Standard facial creams tend to focus on providing short-term hydration, while anti-aging products replenish those reserves over the long term. This has a lasting effect and undoubtedly rejuvenates the skin.
Protection Against Harmful Radiation
When the skin’s moisture reservoir is full, it has another positive effect. Moisture actually helps the skin better defend itself against harmful UV radiation. As a result, the skin stays firmer, and wrinkles have a harder time forming. However, one of the main problems related to our skin is this: the older we get, the less collagen our bodies produce. Yet collagen is incredibly valuable for the skin.
That’s why anti-aging products contain collagen. This protein strengthens the skin and prevents it from losing its elasticity or even becoming brittle. With an adequate supply of collagen, however, our skin can maintain or restore its natural structure. All in all, we can conclude that anti-aging products are better than their reputation—and truly give our skin what it needs. In this respect, these products actually help prevent the skin’s natural aging process from accelerating.
