Key Points at a Glance

  • Nothing beats the vitamins found in fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • But not all toddlers do their parents the favor of eating enough apples, carrots, and the like.
  • Often, it's just a phase where toddlers don't want to eat healthy fruits—in most cases, it passes.
  • Here, we explain whether your child should take additional vitamins in supplement form during this time.

Parents worry about their toddler’s health and well-being. That’s perfectly normal. At some point, eating habits also come under scrutiny. Does my child eat a varied diet? Do they like fresh fruit and plenty of vegetables? Are we feeding our little one properly and making sure they get enough vitamins? Of course, it’s important to ask yourself these questions regularly.

Just switch to a different kind of fruit

But there’s no need to panic. If you notice that your child’s appetite for vitamin-rich foods is a little low right now, the first thing to do is: nothing. Or not much more than continuing to offer your child fresh fruit. After all, in most cases, even toddlers just want to see if there’s something else besides an apple. It might help to simply swap the apple for a sweet peach or the banana for strawberries.

Sure, it doesn't always happen overnight, and sometimes it just turns out to be more difficult. But in that case, it doesn't help to scold the child or otherwise take away the joy of eating. There’s no immediate risk of a vitamin deficiency if they don’t really take to fruits or vegetables for a few days. Plus, there are plenty of other options to try if whole fruits aren’t working—blend a tasty smoothie, make a “face” out of carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes, or grate fruit into their cereal. Any trick goes.

Involve the toddler in the preparation

A good approach is often to involve your child in preparing meals. Let your little one choose from a variety of healthy ingredients while you’re shopping—that alone can make a difference. It becomes really exciting for children when they get to help prepare the food at home. Often, the little ones are so proud of what they’ve created that they’ll eat the healthy meal without hesitation. Growing their own fruits or vegetables in the garden or on the balcony also helps children discover the joy of healthy eating.

However, if the lack of appetite persists and you feel that your child is truly lacking vitamins after some time, consult your pediatrician first. Pediatricians are very familiar with such cases—and usually also with the solutions.

Vitamins as Dietary Supplements for Toddlers

Fortunately, there are now many vitamin supplements produced specifically for children that can be given to them. You should, of course, check with your doctor first to make sure it’s okay. However, the arguments put forward by opponents of these products are no longer valid. They talk about overdoses and serious health consequences—without taking into account that the supplements are precisely tailored to the needs of young children. Especially since you’ll stop giving these products anyway once your child has rediscovered the joy of fresh foods.
