Key Points at a Glance
- In general, we know that yoga makes the body more flexible and exposes the muscles to a whole new kind of strain.
- But is that all there is to it? There has to be more to it than that.
- And in fact, yoga is even more beneficial than you might have imagined.
- Find out here what other positive effects this philosophical teaching from India—which includes a series of mental and physical exercises—can have on you.
Until not too long ago, yoga was still viewed with a bit of skepticism in our part of the world, and some even dismissed it as Far Eastern fantasy. Today, however, we know that yoga is not just—as was long mistakenly believed—something akin to stretching exercises, but that this practice is physically demanding and actually makes you fit and flexible. And this fitness brings with it a host of other benefits.
Yoga: Greater Concentration and Patience
Do you sometimes find yourself having to reread certain lines in a book or the newspaper? If so, a lack of concentration could be the reason. Through yoga, you’ll learn to focus—specifically, on your breathing. Once you’ve internalized this, concentration will soon no longer be a problem. In fact, as soon as you notice a lack of focus in your daily life, just close your eyes and think about the breathing technique—and your body will immediately recall what you’ve learned in yoga, helping you concentrate better.
The second benefit is closely related to this. People who can focus live in the here and now and don’t let their minds wander as easily. It is a celebration of the moment—that is, the present. There is no room for impatience, so it naturally becomes unnecessary.
Better intuition and a boost in creativity through yoga
In our daily lives, we tend to rely on our minds—and not always without good reason. The mind, or the ability to think analytically, is located in the left hemisphere of the brain, yet we rarely use the right hemisphere, which is the seat of intuition and creativity. Through yoga, we become calmer and, in a sense, learn to listen to our inner selves and, when appropriate, to trust our intuition.
The same is true of creativity. However, it’s not just about how to ignite or bring to life a potentially dormant artistic streak. So when we talk about creativity, we’re not necessarily referring to the visual arts. Rather, yoga allows us to find creative solutions to problems by thinking in unusual ways—what some call “thinking outside the box.” We don’t even need an artistic inclination to do this.
Boost Your Self-Confidence with Yoga
If you practice yoga regularly and vary your exercises frequently, you’ll not only improve your ability to focus, but also build strength and inner balance. This is the ideal foundation for developing greater self-confidence and self-awareness.
In addition, yoga has many other wonderful benefits. For example, you can detoxify your body, balance your hormones, and—with certain exercises—ensure that you feel more grounded and “down to earth” after just a short time, once you’ve established a good flow of energy through yoga.
