What's the best way to cleanse your face?

The face is the only part of the body that is constantly exposed without protection. Air pollution, the sun, or even touching your face with unwashed hands put additional strain on the skin. That's why it's important to cleanse your face properly.

Welche Reinigung ist am besten fürs Gesicht?

Key Points at a Glance:

  • The face is the only part of the body that is constantly unprotected
  • Air pollution, the sun, or even touching your face with unwashed hands can put additional strain on your skin
  • An optimal facial cleansing routine consists of two steps: cleansing and toning
  • Every skin type requires a different cleansing routine

Compared to other parts of the body, the face is the only area that is constantly exposed without any covering or protection. This means that airborne pollutants and the sun are always affecting the face. We also touch our faces with our hands several times a day, which transfers even more dirt to the skin. On top of that, depending on our needs, we apply makeup—sometimes even several times a day. This makes proper and thorough facial cleansing all the more important.

These days, there’s an endless variety of products, such as facial cleansing gels, cleansing wipes, and cleansing milk. But what’s the difference, and which cleanser is best suited for which skin type? Here, we’d like to share what we consider to be the most important tips for facial cleansing:

Two Steps to Optimal Facial Cleansing

An optimal facial cleansing routine always consists of two steps. First, cleanse the face, and then tone it. Apply the cleanser in circular motions; afterward, it is recommended to pat the skin dry. Cleansing is followed by toning, which can be done using a facial toner. The facial toner is designed to invigorate and strengthen the skin. After toning, the skin is ready to absorb skincare products, such as a day cream.

  • Normal Skin: For normal skin, you can use cleansing gels or cleansing milk. You can also use cleansing wipes, such as microfiber wipes, that are specifically designed for facial cleansing.
  • Oily Skin: If you have oily skin that is prone to blackheads and pimples, we recommend using foaming cleansers or oil-free antibacterial gels. It’s also important to check the pH level and ensure it’s suitable for your skin type.
  • Sensitive skin: Fragrance-free and alcohol-free cleansing milk with soothing ingredients is ideal.
  • Dry skin: Avoid products that contain alcohol, as they could dry out your skin even more.

Facial wipes are becoming increasingly popular; they’re especially convenient when traveling, as it’s handy to have a resealable pack of facial wipes with you. However, cleaning wipes should be used with caution; when opening and closing the package, germs can get onto the wipes, which could cause skin problems. Since you don’t rinse your face with water after using cleaning wipes, this is not without its risks. It’s also a good idea to make sure that the wipes you use are recyclable.

Facial cleansing should always be gentle, regardless of skin type. Important: While soap is suitable for washing your hands, it is not suitable for the skin on your face. Soap can alter the skin’s pH level and disrupt its natural protective acid mantle.
