Often, a lack of nutrients leads to slow or incomplete composting. Biogarten Compost Accelerator contains a high proportion of nutrients that are important for the composting process, especially nitrogen, and serves as a valuable energy source for microorganisms. This accelerates the decomposition process, achieves higher temperatures in the compost, reduces unpleasant odours and kills pathogens. The resulting humus is mature after a few months and can be used as a natural fertiliser in the garden.

For optimal composting, the compost should be placed in a shady location and covered with a sheep's-wool mulch fleece to protect it from drying out. Always keep the material moist, but avoid waterlogging (the compost should not drip when squeezed by hand). Ensure thorough mixing of kitchen and garden waste. After 3–6 months, mature humus soil can be removed from the lower layers; the process takes longer over winter, depending on the temperature. Without compost accelerator, composting can take 1–2 years. Mature compost is characterised by its dark colour and crumbly structure.

Suitable materials for composting include shredded organic waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, grass clippings, shrub and hedge trimmings, leaves, and flower and ornamental plant cuttings.

How it works

• A lack of nutrients is often responsible for poor composting.
• The nitrogen content plays an important role, but is often present in concentrations that are too low.
• Biogarten Compost Accelerator counteracts this.
• It contains a high proportion of organically bound nitrogen, which provides an optimal nutrient source for microorganisms. It also contains phosphate, potassium and calcium.
• The compost accelerator achieves higher temperatures in the compost, which shortens the composting time, kills pathogens and prevents unpleasant odours.

Application

One handful corresponds to approx. 40 – 60 g, depending on hand size.

• 30 g/m2 per layer of approx. 10 cm of grass clippings
• 50 g/m2 per layer of approx. 20 cm of vegetable waste
• 100 g/m2 per layer of approx. 20 cm of shredded material

When turning the compost, add half the amount per layer once more. Ideally, shred and mix the material before composting and stack it in layers of 20 cm. Sprinkle the specified amount evenly over each layer.

Note: Choose a shady location for the compost.

Cover with a sheep's-wool mulch fleece to protect it from drying out. Keep the material sufficiently moist, but avoid waterlogging (the compost should not drip when pressed with one hand). Ensure that the plant material is thoroughly mixed.

Composting time

• After 3 – 6 months, mature humus can be removed from the lower layers.
• Over the winter months, the process takes longer depending on temperatures and frost.
• Without adding the compost accelerator, composting time increases to 1 to 2 years.
• Fully matured compost has a dark colour and a crumbly structure.

What is suitable for composting?
