How does a pregnancy test work?

Pregnancy is detected in its early stages by measuring the concentration of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in the urine or blood. During pregnancy, hCG is first produced by the fertilized egg and later by the placenta. Among other things, hCG prevents the uterine lining from being shed and stops menstruation from starting.

A fertilized egg usually implants itself in the uterine lining 6–8 days before a missed period. At this point, tiny amounts of hCG are present in the mother’s blood and urine. The hCG concentration is initially very low, but it rises rapidly and predictably during the first weeks of pregnancy.

The pregnancy test contains antibodies that react to the hormone. When the urine comes into contact with the absorbent wick, the urine sample is drawn into the membrane via capillaries. When hCG reaches the test area, a colored line appears. If this line is absent, the test result is negative. As a control, a colored line appears in the control area to indicate whether the pregnancy test was performed correctly.
