The tropical tonka tree produces fruits containing extremely aromatic black seeds, known as tonka beans. The essential oil extracted from them, with its high coumarin content and characteristic sweet caramel scent, forms a warm, oriental base note in many perfumes. In South American tradition, tonka is also used as an insect repellent.
