• The wild blueberry has been known since the Middle Ages. It is found throughout the northern hemisphere and prefers to grow in shady forests, heathlands, and raised bogs. This branched dwarf shrub, 10 to 60 cm tall, bears ripe, dark blue berries from July through September; these berries leave stains on the skin, tongue, and teeth when picked or eaten. In stores or on plantations, one usually finds the much larger cultivated blueberry, which is descended from the American blueberry and has light-colored flesh. Blueberries are eaten fresh or used in cakes, desserts, compotes, and jams. Blueberry wine, made with red wine, is also popular.
• The all-natural blueberry juice that gives Grether’s Pastilles Blueberry their fruity aroma and intense flavor is made from carefully picked and hand-sorted blueberries.
