The fruit of Citrus sinensis, native to the Mediterranean region and the tropics, is called “sweet orange” to distinguish it from the “bitter orange” (Citrus aurantium). The orange tree originated between the Himalayas and southern China. The Portuguese brought it back around 1400. Since then, its cultivation has spread considerably across several countries. The sweet orange tree, a small tree from the Rutaceae family, is an ancient hybrid that probably originated from a cross between Citrus maxima and Citrus reticulata.
