Tea tree is an evergreen tree and belongs to the Familie of the myrtle family, it has no connection to the tea bush (Camellia sinensis). Originally native to Australia, there are more than 300 varieties of Melaleuca, but only Melaleuca alternifolia provides the valuable tea tree oil. This oil is tested in particular for its cineole and terpinen-4-ol content, as these ingredients are decisive for skin tolerance and effectiveness. A cineole content of less than 5% combined with at least 30% terpinen-4-ol is considered optimal quality.
