The date is a stone-fruit-like berry that grows on the date palm, which can reach heights of up to 25 meters and yields its best harvests after about 30 years. The date palm, which can live up to 80 years, is the iconic tree of North African oases. The winners of Roman gladiatorial contests were adorned with date palm branches. As a fresh fruit, the date is of little significance; it is consumed primarily as a dried fruit.
