The Type IIR EN 14683: 2019 surgical disposable masks consist of 3 overlapping nonwoven layers, each of which serves a specific function.  

Spunbond nonwoven outer layer, water-repellent:
This layer gives the mask strength.
Meltblown nonwoven middle layer: This layer serves as a particle filter.
Spunbond nonwoven inner layer: This layer protects the face by preventing direct contact with the middle layer that serves as the filter.

The nonwoven fabric used is treated with an environmentally friendly agent that repels viruses and water. It bears the international GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) environmental certification. A surgical mask should generally be replaced after 6–8 hours.
