The Type IIR EN 14683:2019 disposable surgical masks consist of three layers of nonwoven fabric stacked on top of one another, each of which serves a specific function.  

Outer layer made of spunbond nonwoven fabric, water-repellent:
The purpose of this layer is to give the mask its strength.
Nonwoven intermediate layer made using meltblown technology: This layer acts as a particle filter.
Nonwoven inner layer made using spunbond technology: This layer protects the face by preventing direct contact with the intermediate layer, which acts as a filter.

The fabric (nonwoven) used is treated with an environmentally friendly agent that is virus- and water-repellent. It bears the international GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) environmental certification. A surgical mask should generally be replaced after 6–8 hours.
