Women who are prone to recurrent vaginal infections can take various steps to prevent them. One way to maintain and restore the vaginal environment is to use lactic acid. In a healthy vagina, an acidic environment provides natural protection against infection. Acidifying the vaginal environment with lactic acid supports the growth of the “good” lactobacilli (lactic acid bacteria) typical of the vagina, which make up the majority of the vaginal flora. At the same time, acidification inhibits the growth of “pathogenic” microorganisms. Lactic acid can therefore be used preventively in women prone to recurrent vaginal infections.

Vagisan Lactic Acid are vaginal suppositories that contain a mixture of lactic acid and sodium lactate. They are used to maintain and restore the vagina’s natural acidity (pH level). This level is normally between 3.8 and 4.4. Vagisan Lactic Acid rapidly and effectively acidifies the vaginal environment, restoring it to the vagina’s normal pH level. This also quickly “neutralizes” alkaline bodily fluids such as blood or semen (each of which has a pH above 7).

Application

• Insert a vaginal suppository as deeply as possible into the vagina in the evening before going to bed. The vaginal suppository can be inserted more easily if it is moistened under running water beforehand. It is recommended to use a panty liner or pad, as the vaginal suppositories dissolve very easily and may cause increased vaginal discharge.
• The treatment generally lasts 5–7 days. Vagisan Lactic Acid can also be used over a longer period of time, 2–3 times a week (one vaginal suppository each evening).
