Melissa (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial plant and blooms in July and August, the leaves are harvested before flowering, from June to July - up to three times a year. Originally native to the eastern Mediterranean region, it is now grown throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Lemon balm is often served as a tea, either straight or mixed with other herbs. It was used as a medicinal plant in ancient times. Later, Benedictine monks brought this plant species over the Alps from the Mediterranean regions and planted it in monastery gardens from then on for its health benefits. Melissa tea is not only suitable for hot consumption, but also tastes just as good as iced tea.
