What to do if you are ravenous?
The most important points in brief:
- Ravenous hunger is the sudden desire for certain foods
- Cravings can also indicate a deficiency in certain nutrients
- An eating routine can help against cravings
Who doesn't know it? Cravings and the sudden desire for certain foods. But what does it mean? Why does this sudden lust come and what can be best done about it? Cravings often arise after exercise, because the body burns energy and demands supplies. Since the body only retrieves what has just been burned, this ravenous hunger is not a problem. Often, even after a hearty meal, one has cravings or cravings for sweets or sugar. It is precisely this ravenous hunger that usually arises from habit. Quite often, thirst is also interpreted as a feeling of hunger, which in turn is quenched with (unhealthy) snacks. Of course, there are other reasons that can lead to cravings: Lack of sleep can lead to this, among other things, because the body releases more of the hormone ghrelin, which stimulates the appetite. Or stress can also be a cause of ravenous hunger; If you are busy all day, stressed and forget to eat, then hunger comes in a moment of rest, because the hormone cortisol is released.
Cravings due to lack of certain nutrients
A ravenous hunger attack can also be a deficiency of certain nutrients. If there is a lack of magnesium, for example, one has more desire for chocolate. If the desire for cheese is enormous, this can be due to a vitamin B12, vitamin A or calcium deficiency, among other things.
We would like to present the most important tips from our point of view against ravenous hunger and to combat ravenous hunger attacks:
- Calories are burned during exercise, among other things, and we are usually really hungry afterwards. In the long term, however, regular exercise can help normalize the feeling of hunger.
- Peppermint or green tea fill the stomach pleasantly and suppress the desire for sweets.
- Make sure you eat as much as possible and as healthy as possible.
- By eating regularly at fixed times, the body gets used to this routine and food cravings are less.
But what should you do if, in spite of everything, you always want something sweet?
In spite of the measures taken, ravenous hunger can occur and occur again and again. The following foods can help:
- Nuts (e.g. almonds)
- Oatmeal
- Banana
- Broccoli
However, if you are often afflicted by severe food cravings, a visit to a specialist is necessary for a detailed examination.
