What can be done against silverfish?
The most important points in brief:
- Silverfish are tiny, harmless urine insects and can be eliminated with a few tricks
- Silverfish are harmless urine insects and can be eliminated with a few tricks
- The animals can live up to 5 years
- Simple home remedies help get rid of the animals
They can be found in most households, but nobody likes them: silverfish. Who does not know it: you are busy in the kitchen or in the bathroom and a silverfish whizzes past you out of nowhere. What many people dread is in reality nothing bad at all. Silverfish are wingless and harmless urine insects. But where does the name silverfish come from? The name silver fish is mainly due to the scaly, silver-gray body due to light reflection.
The little animals particularly like darkness, warmth and moisture. They are particularly common where there is high humidity: in the kitchen and in the bathroom. Silverfish feed mostly on sugary foods and can live up to 5 years. But silverfish don't just come into our apartment like that. They usually live in the pipes and water pipes, as this is where they find the best living conditions (warmth and humidity). They only leave their habitat when there is enough warm and humid corners and enough food to be found.
Simple measures can help
Silverfish do not pose a health risk to humans. Others have more of a problem, such as house dust mites. Because, among other things, they are on the meal plan for the small urine insects. Even if they pose no threat to us, one would like to get rid of them right away. However, you should make sure that you not only drive away the silver fish, but also really bring them out of the apartment. This is especially important because the small animals live in the cracks and crevices in the apartment and thus always find a place to hide. Here we would like to share the most important tips from our point of view:
- Mix baking powder with sugar and place it near the silverfish
- You can bait the insects with a preserving jar, which you fill with oat flakes. It is important that you attach a piece of string or paper to the outside of the glass opening. The silverfish then come into the glass, but not out again.
- Also known is the self-made glue trap, which is made from strips of baking paper that are coated with honey. These are best laid out at night.
Should none of the measures help
If the advice mentioned above against the silverfish is of no use, the only option left is to go to a professional pest controller, who is very familiar with the control measures.
