Pigment spots - they are actually hyperpigmentation or so-called age spots - are not normal freckles, although they are also caused by a higher production of the skin pigment melanin. This process is a result of increased UV radiation. But changes that are triggered by hormones also occasionally form pigment spots, for example through pregnancy, through taking the pill or through medication with photosensitizing material. If you have sun-sensitive skin, you should always apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 50.

Which creams are good against pigment spots?

Sure, there is nothing wrong with smooth skin. But not only wrinkles, but also pigment spots often thwart this ideal of beauty. Many women do not find these spots bothersome, others want to get rid of them as soon as possible. But how does that work - are creams sufficient for this?

The answer is yes. There are some creams that can do this. Although a cream will never be able to completely remove hyperpigmentation, the mode of action is geared towards a different effect: the spots are simply lightened. For this reason, they are also called brightening creams. Make sure that the articles against pigment spots contain, for example, soy, arbutin or vitamin C.

What else can be done about pigment spots?

To be clear: There is no danger from pigment spots or hyperpigmentation, colloquially also known as dark spots, actually they are harmless in nature and for some women primarily represent a cosmetic blemish. Nevertheless, you can have the stains surgically removed if you want. The best way to do this is with the - albeit not exactly cheap - laser method, in which the laser beam destroys those skin cells that contain many skin pigments.

If you like it a little more subtle, you can of course cover up the stains. However, conventional make-up is not suitable for this. If the pigment spots are less pronounced, you can use BB or CC creams, otherwise you should use the so-called camouflage make-up.

Peeling can also help against pigment spots

The fact that peelings are good for the skin is nothing new in and of itself. The effect of peeling on dead skin cells, wrinkles and lines on the face has long been known, which is why this method is popular - and it actually helps against pigment spots. Lipo-hydroxy acids and glycolic acids ensure fine pores, a better complexion and at the same time reduce the visibility of hyperpigmentation.

In addition, home remedies are often recommended to cover up the pigment spots. Lemon juice applied to cotton pads is said to help by applying the juice to the affected areas three times a day. Vinegar, potatoes, papaya and turmeric are also said to have a good effect in this context. A homemade paste made from soaked almonds should also work well. And: Eat a lot of foods that have a high vitamin C content; this gets the skin's collagen production going and at the same time brightens the pigment spots.
